What is Indefinite leave to Remain (ILtR)?
After you have lived legally in the UK for a certain length of time, you may be able to apply for permission to settle here. This is known as ILtR.
If you are applying to enter the UK as the partner or child of a British citizen or a person who is settled here, the UKBA may be able to give you immediate permission to settle here permanently.
If you are currently in the UK, your right to apply for settlement will depend on your current immigration category.
Most applicants for settlement must show that they have a knowledge of language and life in the UK.

The Future
Once your settlement visa has been approved, you will be exempt from that point on from immigration control. This means you do not have to apply for any further immigration visas.
If you meet the guidelines on Nationality/Citizenship, you can apply for this normally after being on your ILtR for 12 months. In some instances you can apply sooner.
