Tier 4 Child


Within this section we have Tier 4 General (Adults), Tier 4 Children (Children under 18), Student Visitor, Child Visitor, Prospective Student and information on the old student visa scheme Tier 4 replaced.   


Tier 4 came into force on the 31 March 2009 and replaced the student visa under the old rules prior to the introduction of tier 4. Tier 4 is part of the points-based system.

What is Tier 4 Child?

The Tier 4 (Child) student category is for children coming to the UK to be educated between four and 17 years old. Children between four and 15 years old must be educated at independent fee-paying schools.


Note: It is not possible for a Tier 4 (Child) student to study at a publicly funded school. Tier 4 (Child) students may only study at a publicly funded Further Education College which is able to charge for International Students, and then only once they are aged 16 or 17 years old.


How many points do I need to quality for a Tier 4 Visa?

You require 40 points, 30 points for having a Confirmation of Acceptance and 10 points for having the right amount of funds.


Key areas you must meet to be able to apply:

  1. Having a valid Confirmation of Acceptance (CAS) for Studies from a approved UK Tier 4 Training Institute.
  2. Having enough money to cover course fees and monthly living costs (also known as maintenance or funds).


What type of study can a Tier 4 (Child) student do?

A Tier 4 Child student can do a course that is:


Applying from outside of the UK

If you are applying as a Child student to enter the UK, there are 4 sub-categories to select from to decide what maintenance you will need, they are:

  1. 4-11
  1. 11-15
  2. 16-17
  3. 18 and over

If you obtain a Confirmation of Acceptance (CAS) from the approved UK training institute and you meet the maintenance guidelines depending on your age then you are required to complete VAF9 form.


Applying from within the UK

If you obtain a Confirmation of Acceptance (CAS) from the approved UK training institute and your current student visa does not expire with the next month you can extend your visa within the UK as long as you meet the policy guidelines.


How long can a Tier 4 (Child) student come to the UK for?

The length of stay a Tier 4 (Child) student will depend on their age. A Tier 4

(Child) student under 16 years old can be given:

whichever is shortest, plus four months after the end of the course.


A Tier 4 (Child) student who is 16 or 17 years old can be given:

whichever is shortest, plus four months after the end of the course.


If you are applying to enter the UK as a student you must demonstrate that you have:

A Tier 4 (Child) student must show they have the money available to pay their school fees (course fees and board or lodging fees) for the first year of his/her course or for the entire course, if it is less than a year long.  Note: There are different options open to child students on maintenance; you should first clarify where you will be living, who you will be living with and length you plan to stay in the UK as a student. Only then you can verify what funds you will need by going to the Home Office calculator.


Applying for new visa as a Child Student

A Tier 4 (Child) student who has already started his/her course and is applying for new permission to continue that course must show that they have enough money to pay for his/ her school fees to the end of the current academic year; or for the next academic year if he/

she will continue on his/her course at the start of the next academic year.


A Tier 4 Student qualifies for our differentiation arrangements if he/she:

- Argentina, Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Croatia, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan (those who hold a passport issued by Taiwan that includes the number of the identification card issued by the competent authority in Taiwan in it), Trinidad and Tobago, United States of America or is a British National Overseas


What if I just want to study English?

If you just want to study English in the UK, you can apply under Tier 4 General if the course level of English is set at Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) Level B2.
