Tier 2 visas are part of the points-based system for skilled workers
This Tier was first introduced to the UK in November 2008

If you meet the immigration rules of this visa route, a UK employer (sponsor) is required to issue you a Certificate of Sponsorship 

Since the launch of Tier 2, a number of changes have been made such as Restricted Certificate of Sponsorship, Intra-company Transfer,  Immigration Skills Charge, Priority visa service to name a few
